In honor of Prince-elector Friedrich III, these canals were called the "canals of Friedrich" (Small and Large). Their modern names are Nemoninsky and Polessky.
The total length of the path along the canals from Polessk to Sovetsk was about 70 km!
And, of course, we will go to this amazing place!
After a short excursion to Polessk, to Labiau Castle, we will move to the village of Golovkino.
It is here where the various routes begin along the Polessky canals, rivers and the Curonian lagoon.
Our kayaking route will pass from the Matrosovka River downstream. The canals flow here among the polders and are strengthened by high dams, which, by itself, are unusual for the eye.
You will observe the birds, rafting along the canals past the berths, old German pumping stations and locks.
We will be able to stop at the farms - somewhere they are cozy, residential (there we will taste fresh fish soup!), And somewhere - half-flooded, and the secret and history blows from them.
Perhaps we are lucky to meet an elk, because it is not for nothing that in East Prussia this land was called the “Elk Forest”.
There is enough other animals: cormorants, swans, ducks and even white-tailed eagles.
Thank you, the wonderful world of Friederich's canals and see you soon!

Baltma Tours
about this tour
For the first time, the small town of Polessk was mentioned as a settlement of Labegov,
back in the middle of the XIII century, and in 1280, after the capture,
the crusaders erected in its place the impregnable order castle of Labiau.
And already from the XIV century, work began to protect the land from rain and flood,
and in the 17th century, under the direction of Countess Louise Katarina von Trujes
shipping canals were built between the rivers Deyma and Gilge (Matrosovka).
And today we will go there!
