Vilnius is very old city indeed. The honor for founding Vilnius is justly given to Gediminas (a Lithuanian Duke) in the year 1323. Having declared Vilnius his “royal town», Gediminas created the conditions for its subsequent growth as the political, economical and cultural center of Lithuania. The fortress on Castle Hill was used for defense purposes and was called the Upper Castle.

The Old Town, historical centre of Vilnius, is one of the largest in Eastern Europe (360 ha). The most valuable historic and cultural heritage is concentrated here. The buildings in the old town – there are about 1.5 thousand of them — were built in a number of different centuries, therefore, it is a mixture of all European architectural styles. Although Vilnius is often called a baroque city, here you will find some buildings of gothic, renaissance and other styles. The main sights of the city are the Gediminas Castle and the Cathedral Square, symbols of the capital.

Their combination is also a gateway to the historic centre of the capital. Because of its uniqueness, the Old Town of Vilnius was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Nida, a small colourful fishing port, is located on the border with Kaliningrad on the Neringa Spit. Nida was made famous by German writerThomas Mann who built a summer-house there in 1930. Juodkrante is home to the “Hill of Witches», with its eerie series of wooden sculptures of Lithuanian folk art, set in alcoves in the pine forest.

On Klaipeda's main square is the drama Theatre, built in 1857, fr om whose balcony in 1939 Hitler proclaimed to the crowds the incorporation of Memel into Germany. Palanga is famous for it's Amber Museum. Travel north-east from Palanga to the Hill of Crosses, wh ere tens of thousands of crosses of all sizes adorn this small hill that has long been the symbol of Lithuanian national and religious fervour.

Palanga has over the years been of major strategic importance, no importance whatsoever, part of Latiania, and up until the mid-19th century and subsequent invention of the seaside holiday, a small fishing village. Modern Palanga is a year-round health resort, but is famed more for what happens during the short summer period between the beginning of June and September.
